We can't do this alone
Hello Again,
This week in the thick of some of the most heartbreaking days for our country, I was talking to one of our founding members (hi Mary!) about The Assembly and its role in helping women engage with each other, with the community, and in this national climate. Building something that is for women specifically is inherently political and creating a space for people to come together physically and emotionally to talk about things that are hard to talk about (and do things that are hard to do with our bodies) is one of the biggest reasons that I am doing this. It's not just about work and working out.
In the beginning of 2017, I felt helpless. That is when I started to think about The Assembly. I started to shift my mind away from this desire to yell my anger into the void of the internet (though I still do that sometimes too) and toward creating a place that I've personally wanted and needed. I changed my mindset from "I have to broadcast to as many people at once" to "there is so much power in giving space to people who need to be listened to and believed one at a time." Working out has always been as much about the mental break as the physical results for me. It's what keeps me sane. It also motivates me to be stronger everywhere in my life and in this fight. I want to hear what lights your fire and what support you need, too.
Something beautiful I read today: Hymn: A New Poem by Sherman Alexie
Being together is so important and many of the amazing instructors I've talked to about teaching at The Assembly have said the same thing: "I want people to actually touch each other." It's a foreign concept for so many of our workouts and it feels so right for us. No, no, not all the classes, but we hope you will try out these sweaty communions.
I hope to see you soon,
